Rule 481-51.19 - Anesthesia Services

(1) There shall be written policies and procedures governing anesthesia services that are consistent with the needs and resources of the hospital. Written policies and procedures governing anesthesia services shall be developed and implemented in consultation with and with the approval of the hospital's medical staff and, at a minimum, provide for:
a. Anesthesia services
under the direction of a qualified doctor of medicine or osteopathy.
b. The qualifications of individuals
authorized to administer anesthesia as set out in the hospital's medical staff
bylaws or medical staff rules and regulations.
c. Preanesthesia evaluation, appraisal of a
patient's current condition, preparation of an intraoperative anesthesia
record, and discharge criteria for patients.
d. Equipment functioning and safety,
including ensuring that a qualified medical doctor, osteopathic physician and
surgeon or anesthetist checks, prior to the administration of anesthesia, the
readiness, availability, cleanliness, and working condition of all equipment to
be used in the administration of anesthetic agents and minimizing electrical
hazard in anesthesia areas.

Quality assurance, including infection control procedures; integration of
anesthesia services into various areas of the hospital; and ongoing monitoring,
review, and evaluation of anesthesia services, processes, and
procedures.
(2) Policies and procedures may be adjusted as appropriate to reflect provision of anesthesia services in inpatient or outpatient settings.
