Rule 282-13.9 - Teacher Intern License

(1) Authorization. The teacher intern is authorized to teach within qualified endorsement areas approved by the Iowa department of education for teacher internships.

(2) Term. The term of the teacher intern license will be one school year. This license is nonrenewable.

(3) Teacher intern requirements. A teacher intern license and endorsement may be issued to an applicant who has been recommended by an institution with a state-approved intern program and who has met the background check requirements set forth in rule 282-13.1 (272).

(4) Requirements to convert the teacher intern license to the initial license. An initial license shall be issued upon application provided that the teacher intern has met the requirements as verified by the recommendation from the state-approved program.

(5) Requirements to extend the teacher intern license if the teacher intern does not complete all of the education coursework during the term of the teacher intern license.

a. A one-year extension of the teacher intern license may be issued upon application provided that the teacher intern has met both of the following requirements:
(1) Successful completion of one year of teaching experience during the teacher internship.

(2) Verification by the recommending official at the approved teacher intern program that the teacher intern has not completed all of the coursework required for the initial license.

b. Only one year of teaching experience during the term of the teacher intern license or the extension of a teacher intern license may be used to convert the teacher intern license to a standard teaching license.
