Section 411.725 - Pharmaceutical Items

a) The facility shall have a written plan that provides for the proper management and secure storage of pharmaceutical items and addresses the following:
1) Prescription practices, including the
following requirements:
A) Psychotropic
medications shall be prescribed only when clinically indicated as one facet of
a program of therapy, and shall comply with requirements set out in 89 Ill.
Adm. Code 325 (Administration of Psychotropic Medications to Children for Whom
the Department is Legally Responsible);
B) "Stop order" time periods shall be
required for all medications; and
C) The prescribing provider shall re-evaluate
a prescription prior to its renewal and at a minimum every 30 days.
2) Procedures for medication
receipt, secure storage, issuance, and/or processing documentation.
3) Secure storage and periodic inventory of
all controlled substances, syringes, and needles.
4) Provision of medicine to children and
youth shall be by persons properly trained and under the supervision of the
physician and facility director or designee.
5) Accountability for providing medications
to children and youth in a timely manner and according to medical
orders.
6) Review of individual and
aggregate medication errors.
b) The person providing medications to children and youth shall have training from a physician or designee and shall be accountable for providing medications according to the physician's requirements and the facility plan. Medications provided shall be recorded in a manner and on a form approved by the facility director.
