Groundwater pollution is a particularly serious problem because, once an aquifer has been contaminated, the resource cannot usually be cleaned without the expenditure of great time, effort and resources. Techniques that can be applied to the problem with varying degrees of success are as follows:
a) Impermeable barriers:

d) Leachate control - Leachate control systems are applicable to control of surface seeps and seepage of leachate to groundwater. Leachate collection systems consist of a series of drains which intercept the leachate and channel it to a sump, wetwell, treatment system, or appropriate surface discharge point.
