Section 604.1450 - Surface Water Crossings

a) For above-water crossings, the pipe must be adequately supported and anchored, protected from damage and freezing, and accessible for repair or replacement.
b) Underwater Crossings
1) A minimum cover of five feet
must be provided over the pipe.
2)
When crossing water courses that are greater than 15 feet in width, the
following apply:
A) the pipe must be of
special construction, having flexible, restrained or welded watertight
joints;
B) valves must be provided
at both ends of water crossings so that the section can be isolated for testing
or repair;
C) the valves must be
easily accessible and not subject to flooding; and
D) permanent taps or other provisions to
allow insertion of a small meter to determine leakage and obtain water samples
must be made on each side of the valve closest to the supply source.
