Section 525.50 - Euthanasia

a) Methods of euthanasia must be approved by the Department and include such methods as:
1) captive bolt, gunshot, cervical
dislocation and stunning (mechanical only);
2) inhalants, including halothane,
isoflurane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide; and
3) noninhalants, including barbiturates and
barbiturate derivatives that are acquired and dispensed in accordance with the
Illinois Controlled Substances Act [ 720 ILCS 570 ], U.S. Controlled Substances
Act (
21
USC 801 et seq.), and U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration Regulations ( 21 CFR 1301 et seq.) may be used for euthanasia of
mammals; acetone may be used for euthanasia of striped skunks.
b) Animals captured under authority of this Part may be transferred to a euthanasia agency (see 510 ILCS 72/25), if the agency agrees to accept them.
c) Violation is a Class B misdemeanor.
