(a) Except as otherwise provided herein or when shown to be inappropriate or unfeasible, for the purpose of computing the amount of disability benefits of a non-salaried employee during any period of disability, "average weekly wage" shall be the amount determined by dividing the total wages earned by the employee in the employment of the employee's last employer for the eight weeks or portion thereof that the employee was in the employment immediately preceding and including the employee's last day worked prior to commencement of the disability, by the number of weeks or portion thereof of the employment.

(b) If an employee's remuneration consists of commissions or piece-work pay, the commissions or piece- work pay earned by the employee during the fifty-two consecutive weeks immediately preceding the date of the employee's disability shall be used in determining the employee's average weekly wage.
