Section 9C.08 - Bicycle Box

Support:
01 (DE Revision) A bicycle box (see Figure 9C-10) on the approach to a signalized intersection can provide one or more of the following benefits:
Guidance:
02 (DE Revision) At intersections with high numbers of conflicts between turning motorists and bicyclists during the green interval of a signal, consideration should be given to treatments instead of or in addition to the bicycle box.
Option:
03 (DE Revision) These treatments may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Standard:
04 (DE Revision) When used, a bicycle box shall be formed by an advance stop line placed at least 10 feet in advance of the intersection stop line.
05 (DE Revision) At least one bicycle symbol shall be placed within a bicycle box (see Figures 9C-10 and 9C-11).
06 (DE Revision) A NO TURN ON RED (R10-11 series) sign shall be installed wherever a bicycle box is placed in a lane from which turns on red would otherwise be permitted.
07 (DE Revision) Where a bicycle box is provided across multiple lanes of an approach, countdown pedestrian signals (see Section 4E.07) shall be provided for the crosswalk across the approach on which the bicycle box is located.
Support:
08 (DE Revision) Countdown pedestrian signals can inform bicyclists whether there is adequate time remaining to cross to an adjacent lane before the onset of the green signal phase for that approach.
Guidance:
09 (DE Revision) A STOP HERE ON RED (R10-6 or R10-6a) sign should be provided at the advance stop line defining the bicycle box with an EXCEPT BICYCLES (R3-7bP) word legend plaque below (see Figure 9C-11).
10 (DE Revision) A bicycle lane of at least 50 feet in length should be provided on the approach to a bicycle box.
Support:
11 (DE Revision) The bicycle lane approaching the bicycle box will allow bicyclists to enter the bicycle box without riding between lanes.
Option:
12 (DE Revision) Green colored pavement may be used within the bicycle box and the approach bicycle lane.
