Section 3012 - Amendment to the Water Quality Control Plan for Ocean Waters of California - Bacteria Provisions and a Water Quality Standards Variance Policy (Ocean Plan Amendment) Adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board on August 7, 2018

On August 7, 2018 the State Water Resources Control Board adopted Resolution 2018-0038, which adopted the Ocean Plan Amendment.

The Ocean Plan Amendment:

(1) Provides a consistent regulatory approach to protect the primary contact recreation beneficial use by (1) removing the previously established total coliform objectives, (2) revising the enterococci objectives, and (3) retaining the previously established fecal coliform objective.

(2) Includes the following implementation elements: reference system/antidegradation and natural sources exclusion approaches to account for natural sources of bacteria in the context of a total maximum daily load or a basin plan amendment and a water quality standards variance policy.
