(a) Limited term licenses/permits (less than one year) may be granted to provide for lawful possession until the DOJ has issued a decision on an application to renew a license/permit if that determination has taken longer than 30 days or for the purpose of using dangerous weapons for a limited term during a commercial motion picture, television production, or other commercial entertainment event. Limited term permits may also be issued when a background investigation has not yet been completed or before a background investigation has been initiated if the applicant is working under a valid federal defense contract.

(b) In addition, permits shall stipulate any conditions or limitations that apply on their face.

1. Change without regulatory effect renumbering section 975 to section 4142, including amendment of subsections (a)(3) and (a)(4), filed 6-28-2006 pursuant to section 100, title 1, California Code of Regulations (Register 2006, No. 26).
2. Change without regulatory effect amending section and NOTE filed 12-27-2011 pursuant to section 100, title 1, California Code of Regulations (Register 2011, No. 52).
3. Amendment of subsections (a)(2), (a)(4) and (b) filed 6-27-2019 as an emergency; operative 7-1-2019 (Register 2019, No. 26). A Certificate of Compliance must be transmitted to OAL by 12-30-2019 or emergency language will be repealed by operation of law on the following day.
4. Change without regulatory effect amending subsection (a)(3)-(4) filed 12-17-2019 pursuant to section 100, title 1, California Code of Regulations (Register 2019, No. 51).
5. Amendment of subsections (a)(2), (a)(4) and (b) refiled 12-19-2019 as an emergency; operative 12-31-2019 (Register 2019, No. 51). A Certificate of Compliance must be transmitted to OAL by 3-30-2020 or emergency language will be repealed by operation of law on the following day.
6. Editorial correction implementing 12-17-2019 nonsubstantive amendments (Register 2020, No. 13).
7. Amendment of subsections (a)(2), (a)(4) and (b) refiled 3-25-2020 as an emergency; operative 3-31-2020 (Register 2020, No. 13). A Certificate of Compliance must be transmitted to OAL by 6-29-2020 or emergency language will be repealed by operation of law on the following day.
8. Certificate of Compliance as to 3-25-2020 order, including amendment of subsections (a)(2), (a)(4) and (b), transmitted to OAL 3-18-2020 and filed 4-27-2020; amendments operative 4-27-2020 pursuant to Government Code section 11343.4(b)(3) (Register 2020, No. 18).
9. Change without regulatory effect amending article 6 heading, renumbering former section 4142 to section 4146 and renumbering section 4129 to section 4142 filed 1-28-2021 pursuant to section 100, title 1, California Code of Regulations (Register 2021, No. 5).
