I. POLICY OF DEPARTMENT:
The use of corporal punishment is contrary to humane standards of care and professional correctional practices and as such is absolutely prohibited by an employee of the Department of Correction.
II. EXPLANATION:
A. Corporal punishment is defined as the
striking, pushing or shoving of an individual for the purpose of causing pain
or discomfort; the improper use of chemicals in any form; violence of any
nature; the use of profane or abusive language or racial slurs directed toward
the inmate; or any measure which may be injurious to an individual.
B. This rule in no way prohibits a staff
member from using that force necessary to carry out lawful orders; to protect
himself from injury; to prevent injury to other employees or inmates; or to
prevent property damage or escape.
