17 AAC 28.020 - Restrictions on buses by size or type

(a) For buses 40 feet or less in length, including equipment - this size of bus may operate on the entire state highway system without an oversized vehicle permit if the bus is
(1) not wider than 102 inches excluding
equipment, and
(2) not higher than
14 feet including equipment.
(b) For buses over 40 feet but less than 50 feet in length, including equipment, this size of bus may operate
(1) on the specially designated highways
listed in 17 AAC 28.030(a)
without an oversize vehicle permit, if the bus
(A) is not wider than 102 inches excluding
equipment; and
(B) is not higher
than 14 feet including equipment;
(C) has an engine power rating of at least
400 horsepower;
(2) on
other portions of state highway system with an oversize vehicle permit if the
bus
(A) is not wider than 102 inches excluding
equipment;
(B) is not higher than
14 feet including equipment;
(C)
has an engine power rating of at least 400 horsepower;
(D) is driven on a highway with
(i) lane widths of less than 11 feet or
traveling surface more than 20 feet wide but less than 22 feet and a pilot car
precedes the bus; or
(ii) a
traveling surface less than 20 feet, two pilot cars precede the bus, and
operating at reduced speed as stated in the permit; and
(E) travels only during daylight
hours.
(c) For an articulated bus - this type of bus may only operate on the specially designated highways listed in 17 AAC 28.030(b) with an oversize vehicle permit from May 1 - September 30 of each year if
(1) the overall length of the bus is not
greater than 60 feet excluding equipment;
(2) the length of each unit of the bus is not
greater than 40 feet excluding equipment;
(3) the width of each unit of the bus is not
greater than 102 inches excluding equipment;
(4) the height of each unit of the bus is not
greater than 14 feet excluding equipment;
(5) the engine power rating is at least 450
horsepower;
(6) the bus has at
least four axles; and
(7) a
turntable mechanism, with motion limiters, connects the two units of the
bus.
