Section 360-X-2-.05 - Special Certification For Fire Chief

(1) Requirements
(a) The candidate must be employed as the
chief executive officer of a fire fighting agency in the State of Alabama and
must not be currently certified as a Firefighter I by the Commission.
(b) The candidate must have accumulated
training, certification and/or experience based on professional fire service
employment.
(c) The candidate must
have on file with the Commission a physical statement (AFC & PSC Form 05)
from a physician licensed to practice in Alabama.
(d) The candidate must demonstrate the
capacity to function as the chief executive officer of a fire fighting agency
by providing documentation to support compliance with one of the following:
1. A minimum of five years of related
professional experience in the fire service and the possession of a bachelor's
degree in a related discipline.
2.
A minimum of seven years of related professional experience in the fire service
and the possession of an associate degree in a related discipline.
3. A minimum of ten years of related
professional experience in the fire service and successful completion, with a
score of greater than or equal to 70%, on each of the following Commission
examinations:
(i) Firefighter I/II
(ii) Fire Officer I
(iii) Fire Department Safety Officer:
Incident Safety Officer
(e) This special certification is limited to
employment only with the fire fighting agency referenced in section (1) (a).
(2) Administration
(a) Scope. This standard identifies the
requirements necessary to obtain a Special Certification for Fire
Chief.
(b) Purpose. The purpose of
this standard is to specify the minimum levels of education, experience, and/or
demonstration of proficiency required to obtain a Special Certification for
Fire Chief. It is not the intent of this standard to restrict any jurisdiction
from exceeding these requirements.
(c) General. Verification of all documents
provided by the candidate, or successful completion of all testing processes,
must be completed prior to the issuance of a Special Certification for Fire
Chief.
(3) Objectives
(a) The objectives of this standard are based
on the ability of the candidate to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary
to function as the chief executive officer of a fire fighting agency in the
State of Alabama as determined by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel
Standards & Education Commission.
The agency was previously named "Alabama Fire Fighters' Personnel Standards And Education Commission".
