a culturally affiliated Indian Tribe or
Native Hawaiian organization.
Repatriation of the cultural items in
this notice to a requestor may occur on
or after December 16, 2024. If competing
requests for repatriation are received,
the University of California, Riverside
must determine the most appropriate
requestor prior to repatriation. Requests
for joint repatriation of the cultural
items are considered a single request
and not competing requests. The
University of California, Riverside is
responsible for sending a copy of this
notice to the Indian Tribes and Native
Hawaiian organizations identified in
this notice and to any other consulting
parties.

Notice.
In accordance with the Native
American Graves Protection and
Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Ball State
University (BSU) intends to repatriate a
certain cultural item that meets the
definition of an unassociated funerary
object and that has a cultural affiliation
with the Indian Tribes or Native
Hawaiian organizations in this notice.
DATES: Repatriation of the cultural item
in this notice may occur on or after
December 16, 2024.

SUMMARY:
Abstract of Information Available
A total of one cultural item has been
requested for repatriation. The one
unassociated funerary object is an effigy
vessel or hooded water bottle (listed as
animal-shaped vessel in BSU records).
The item was donated to BSU by a
private donor in 1953. Based on
consultation, available documentation,
and archaeological evidence pertaining
to similar funerary objects, we conclude
that this cultural item was likely
removed from an ancestral Osage burial
at an unrecorded date and location prior
to 1953. There are no institutional
records indicating the presence of any
potentially hazardous substances used
to treat the cultural item.
Determinations
BSU has determined that:
• The one unassociated funerary
object described in this notice is
reasonably believed to have been placed
intentionally with or near individual
human remains at the time of death or
later as part of the death rite or
ceremony.
• There is a reasonable connection
between the cultural item described in
this notice and The Osage Nation.

sword and one pipe. These items are
associated with Overhill Cherokee
towns (Tellico and Citico sites) in
Monroe County, TN and one item has a
provenience of the Old Town Site
(40WM2) in Williamson County, TN.

Determinations
The Tennessee State Museum has
determined that:
• The 120 unassociated funerary
objects described in this notice are
reasonably believed to have been placed
intentionally with or near human
remains, and are connected, either at the
time of death or later as part of the death
rite or ceremony of a Native American
culture according to the Native
American traditional knowledge of a
lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or
Native Hawaiian organization. The
unassociated funerary objects have been
identified by a preponderance of the
evidence as related to human remains,
specific individuals, or families, or
removed from a specific burial site or
burial area of an individual or
individuals with cultural affiliation to
an Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian
organization.
• There is a reasonable connection
between the cultural items described in
this notice and the Cherokee Nation;
Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and
the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee
Indians in Oklahoma.

Abstract of Information Available
Associated funerary objects have been
identified from CA–SUT–55, located in
the southern portion of Sutter County,
CA. The single lot of associated funerary
objects include lithic materials. The
funerary objects were collected by
individuals associated with the
California State University, Sacramento
in 1978 on behalf of the US Army Corps.
of Engineers. They have since been
housed at the University under
accession 81–88.
Cultural Affiliation
Based on the information available
and the results of consultation, cultural
affiliation is clearly identified by the
information available about the
associated funerary objects described in
this notice.
Determinations
The California State University,
Sacramento has determined that:
• The one lot of objects described in
this notice are reasonably believed to
have been placed intentionally with or
near individual human remains at the
time of death or later as part of the death
rite or ceremony.
• There is a connection between the
associated funerary objects described in
this notice and the Cachil DeHe Band of
Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian
Community of the Colusa Rancheria,
California; Ione Band of Miwok Indians
of California; Kletsel Dehe Wintun
Nation of the Cortina Rancheria
(previously listed as Kletsel Dehe Band
of Wintun Indians); Shingle Springs
Band of Miwok Indians, Shingle Springs
Rancheria (Verona Tract), California;
United Auburn Indian Community of
the Auburn Rancheria of California; and
