Federal Register / Vol. 86, No. 95 / Wednesday, May 19, 2021 / Notices
by Level A and Level B harassment.
Therefore, the Navy requests
authorization to incidentally take
marine mammals.
Specified Activities
The Navy proposes to replace or
repair several sections of deteriorating,
unstable, hazardous, and eroding
bulkhead, sheet pile, and revetment
(approximately 2,730 total linear feet)
along the Coddington Cove waterfront of
Naval Station Newport in Newport
Rhode Island. Over time, the existing
storm sewer systems and bulkheads
along the Coddington Cove waterfront
have severely degraded due to erosion
from under-capacity stormwater system
piping and aging infrastructure. This
impacts the ability of the installation to
minimize shoreline erosion and safety
risks from associated upland subsidence
while maintaining potential berthing
space. The Navy expects construction
will require approximately 222 nonconsecutive in-water pile driving
workdays over the 5 year period. Seven
species of marine mammals have been
observed in the area and have the
potential to be taken by the Navy’s
activities.
Information Solicited
Interested persons may submit
information, suggestions, and comments
concerning the Navy’s request (see
ADDRESSES). NMFS will consider all
information, suggestions, and comments
related to the request during the
development of proposed regulations
governing the incidental taking of
marine mammals by the Navy, if
appropriate.

Acting Director, Office of Protected Resources,
