History and Description of the Remains
In 1937, human remains representing,
at minimum, one individual were
removed from an unidentified site in
Two Rivers, Manitowoc County, WI.
Notes indicate that the unidentified
collector worked for a sewer company
and found this individual while
excavating under a playground. The
individual was described as having a
‘‘tomahawk in skull.’’ In January 1999,
this individual was transferred to

Evelyn Anderes. The human remains
are fragmentary and belong to an adult
18-to-25 years old, possibly female. No
known individuals were identified. No
associated funerary objects are present.
Staff at Pueblo Grande Museum have
attempted to find additional information
about the individual described in this
notice. Staff have contacted the Anderes
family and the Wisconsin State Historic
Preservation Office (WI SHPO). A
researcher affiliated with the WI SHPO
was unable to locate additional
information regarding the collection of
this individual.

Officials of the Pueblo Grande
Museum have determined that:
• Pursuant to 25 U.S.C. 3001(9), the
human remains described in this notice
represent the physical remains of one
individual of Native American ancestry.
• Pursuant to 25 U.S.C. 3001(2), a
relationship of shared group identity
cannot be reasonably traced between the
Native American human remains and
associated funerary objects and any
present-day Indian Tribe.
• According to final judgments of the
Indian Claims Commission or the Court
of Federal Claims, the land from which
the Native American human remains
were removed is the aboriginal land of
the Citizen Potawatomi Nation,
Oklahoma; Forest County Potawatomi
Community, Wisconsin; Hannahville
Indian Community, Michigan; Match-ebe-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi
Indians of Michigan; Menominee Indian
Tribe of Wisconsin; Nottawaseppi
Huron Band of the Potawatomi,

Consultation
A detailed assessment of the human
remains was made by the Pueblo Grande
Museum professional staff in
consultation with representatives of the
Hopi Tribe of Arizona; Pueblo of
Acoma, New Mexico; and the Zuni
Tribe of the Zuni Reservation, New
Mexico (hereafter referred to as ‘‘The
Tribes’’).
History and Description of the Remains
At an unknown date, prior to 1967,
human remains representing, at
minimum, four individuals were
removed from an unknown site
identified as ‘‘Sheep’s Crossing’’ in
Arizona. In 1967, the human remains
were documented at Pueblo Grande
Museum. In 1995, additional human
remains with the same catalog number
were found in Pueblo Grande Museum
storage. In 2006, additional human
remains with the same catalog number
were found at residence of former
Pueblo Grande Museum Director Don
Hiser. The human remains range from
complete to partial in preservation, and
belong to an elderly adult female, a
possible adult male, and two adult
individuals of indeterminant sex. No
known individuals were identified. The
11 associated funerary objects include
one lot lithics, one shell bracelet
fragment, one lot shell, one lot Tularosa
and Reserve Black-on-white sherds, one
Cibola whiteware sherd, two lots brown
ware sherds, one unidentified glaze
ware sherd, one polychrome sherd, one
lot Tularosa style red-on-white sherds,
and one lot faunal bone. Based on the
associated funerary object types, these
human remains are likely Ancestral
Pueblo.
