The length of the project is approximately 6.0 miles. The project proposes to widen I–440/ US 1–64 from four lanes to six lanes, reconstruct interchanges, replace structures, and repair pavement conditions. The project is included in NCDOT’s adopted 2018–2027 State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP) as project number U–2719 and is scheduled for right of way acquisition and construction to begin in fiscal year 2019, being let as a design-build contract. The project is also included in the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Organization’s (CAMPO) 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) (April 2013) and 2045 MTP (February 19, 2018).
