The Council is considering changing the trip limit once 100% of the commercial landings quota is reached. The Council is scheduled to take final action on this issue at its June 2018 Council meeting via a Framework Adjustment to the MSB Fishery Management Plan. Following the retrieval of the albatross from the ocean the vessel operator must record the condition of the bird on a recovery data form. A veterinarian will use the information to provide advice to the captain for caring for the bird. If the albatross is dead, the captain must attach an identification tag to the carcass to assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) biologists in subsequent studies. This collection of information is one of the terms and conditions contained in the Endangered Species Act Section 7 biological opinion issued by USFWS, and is intended to maximize the probability of the longterm survival of short-tailed albatrosses accidentally taken by longline gear.
