Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service Title: Importation of Live Swine, Pork and Pork Products, and Swine Semen from the European Union. OMB Control Number: 0579–0218. Summary of Collection: The Animal Health Protection Act (AHPA) of 2002 is the primary Federal law governing the protection of animal health. The Law gives the Secretary of Agriculture broad authority to detect, control, or eradicate pests or diseases of livestock or poultry. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) regulates the importation of animals and animal products into the United States to guard against the introduction of animal diseases not present or prevalent here. Need and Use of the Information: APHIS will collect information using an Application for Import or in Transit Permit, concerning the origin and history of the items destined for importation into the United States. APHIS will also collect information to ensure that swine, pork and pork products, and swine semen pose a negligible risk of introducing exotic swine diseases into the United States. A Declaration of Importation form is also used to collection information in this collection. If the information is not collected, it would cripple APHIS’ ability to ensure that swine, pork and pork products, and swine semen pose a minimal risk of introducing classical swine fever and other exotic animal diseases into the United States. 52711 Description of Respondents: Foreign Federal Governments and Businesses.
