On April 2, 2014, Green Energy
Storage Corp filed an application for a
preliminary permit, pursuant to section
4(f) of the Federal Power Act (FPA),
proposing to study the feasibility of the
Weed Heights Pumped Storage Project
to be located off-stream near Yerington,

Nevada. The sole purpose of a
preliminary permit, if issued, is to grant
the permit holder priority to file a
license application during the permit
term. A preliminary permit does not
authorize the permit holder to perform
any land-disturbing activities or
otherwise enter upon lands or waters
owned by others without the owners’
express permission.
The proposed 150-megawatt closed
loop pumped storage project would use
the 775 feet of available head between
a new upper reservoir and an existing
open pit mine. The project would
consist of the following: (1) A new 35foot-high upper dam with a total crest
length of 8,000 feet, impounding an
upper reservoir with a maximum storage
of 2,600 acre-feet; (2) an existing open
pit mine lower reservoir, with a
maximum storage of 3,000 acre-feet; (3)
a tunnel connecting the two reservoirs
consisting of a 800-foot-long, 16-footdiameter shaft; (4) two 75-megawatt
pump/turbines; (5) a 2,700-foot-long, 16foot-diameter draft tube, extending from
the turbines to the lower reservoir; (6)
a new 120-kilovolt (kV) transmission
line extending about 7 miles from a new
substation to the existing 120-kV
transmission line owned by Sierra
Pacific Power; and (7) appurtenant
facilities. The estimated average annual
energy production would be 400
gigawatt hours.

(NACEPT) is a necessary committee
which is in the public interest.
