to permit the use of a more robust
AREVA Advanced W17 high thermal
performance fuel. This new fuel has
been selected to address fuel assembly
distortion and its resultant fuel-

handling issues. The AREVA Advanced
W17 HTP fuel assembly design consists
of standard uranium dioxide fuel pellets
with gadolinium oxide burnable poison
and M5TM cladding. The new fuel
design ensures mechanical
compatibility with the existing fuel,
reactor core, control rods, steam supply
system, and fuel-handling system. The
transition from the existing fuel
(AREVA Mark-BW) to new fuel is
planned to occur over two refueling
cycles for each unit.

issuance and shall be implemented
prior to startup from fall 2013 refueling
outage (RFO) for Unit 1, and prior to
startup from fall 2012 RFO for Unit 2.
