SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: I. Summary of Information About the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) IRIS is a database that contains potential adverse human health effects information that may result from chronic (or lifetime) exposure to specific chemical substances found in the environment. The database (available on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/iris) contains qualitative and quantitative health effects information for more than 540 chemical substances that may be used to support the first two steps (hazard identification and doseresponse evaluation) of a risk assessment process. When supported by available data, the database provides oral reference doses (RfDs) and inhalation reference concentrations (RfCs) for chronic health effects, and oral slope factors and inhalation unit risks for carcinogenic effects. Combined with specific exposure information, VerDate Aug<31>2005 15:18 May 20, 2008 Jkt 214001 government and private entities can use IRIS data to help characterize public health risks of chemical substances in a site-specific situation and thereby support risk management decisions designed to protect public health. ACTION: Notice of availability; opening of public comment period. AGENCY: SUMMARY: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or we) is announcing the availability of, and soliciting public comments for 45 days on, the proposed approval of the radioactive, remotehandled (RH), transuranic (TRU) waste characterization program implemented by the Central Characterization Project (CCP) at Savannah River Site (SRS). This waste, which originated from the Battelle Columbus Laboratory (BCL), is intended for disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. In accordance with the WIPP Compliance Criteria, EPA evaluated the characterization of RH TRU debris waste from SRS–CCP during a baseline inspection (and follow-up inspections) conducted the weeks of July 17–19, 2007, July 31—August 2, 2007, and December 4–5, 2007. Using the systems and processes developed as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO) program to characterize RH TRU waste, EPA verified whether DOE could adequately characterize RH TRU waste consistent with the Compliance Criteria. The results of EPA’s evaluation of the SRS– CCP program and its proposed approval are described in the Agency’s inspection report, which is available for review in the public dockets listed in ADDRESSES. We will consider public comments received on or before the due date mentioned in DATES. This notice summarizes the waste characterization processes evaluated by EPA and EPA’s proposed approval. As required by the 40 CFR 194.8, at the end of a 45-day comment period EPA will evaluate public comments received, and if appropriate, finalize the reports responding to the relevant public comments, and a final report and approval letter to DOE. DATES: Comments must be received on or before July 7, 2008. ADDRESSES: Submit your comments, identified by Docket ID No. EPA–HQ– OAR–2008–0410, by one of the following methods: E:\FR\FM\21MYN1.SGM 21MYN1
