Title: Gas Guzzler Tax.
OMB Number: 1545–0242.
Form Number: 6197.
Abstract: Internal Revenue Code
section 4064 imposes a gas guzzler tax
on the sale, use, or first lease by a
manufacturer or first lease by a
manufacturer or importer of
automobiles whose fuel economy does
not meet certain standards for fuel
economy. The tax is computed on Form
6197. The IRS uses the information to
verify computation of tax and
compliance with the law.
Current Actions: There are no changes
being made to the form at this time.
Type of Review: Extension of a
currently approved collection.
Affected Public: Business or other forprofit organizations and individuals or
households.

SUMMARY: The Department of the
Treasury, as part of its continuing effort
to reduce paperwork and respondent
burden, invites the general public and
other Federal agencies to take this
opportunity to comment on proposed
and/or continuing information
collections, as required by the
Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995,
Public Law 104–13 (44 U.S.C.
3506(c)(2)(A)). Currently, the IRS is
soliciting comments concerning Form

Abstract: Form 966 is filed by a
corporation whose shareholders have
agreed to liquidate the corporation. As
a result of the liquidation, the
shareholders receive the property of the
corporation in exchange for their stock.
The IRS uses Form 966 to determine if
the liquidation election was properly
made and if any taxes are due on the
transfer of property.
