NUCLEAR REGULATORY
COMMISSION

Draft Regulatory Guide: Issuance,
Availability
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC) has issued for public
comment a draft of a revised guide in
the agency’s Regulatory Guide Series.
This series has been developed to
describe and make available to the
public such information as methods that
are acceptable to the NRC staff for
implementing specific parts of the
NRC’s regulations, techniques that the
staff uses in evaluating specific
problems or postulated accidents, and
data that the staff needs in its review of
applications for permits and licenses.
The draft Revision 2 of Regulatory
Guide 1.193, ‘‘ASME Code Cases Not
Approved for Use,’’ is temporarily
identified by its task number, DG–1135,
which should be mentioned in all
related correspondence. Like its
predecessors, this proposed revision
lists the Code Cases that the NRC has
determined are not acceptable for
generic use as specified in Section III,
‘‘Rules for Construction of Nuclear
Power Plant Components,’’ and Section
XI, ‘‘Rules for Inservice Inspection of
Nuclear Power Plant Components,’’ of
the Boiler and Pressure Vessel (BPV)
Code promulgated by the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers
(ASME). (In so doing, this guide
complements Revision 34 of Regulatory
Guide 1.84, ‘‘Design, Fabrication, and
Materials Code Case Acceptability,
ASME Section III,’’ and Revision 15 of
Regulatory Guide 1.147, ‘‘Inservice
Inspection Code Case Acceptability,
ASME Section XI, Division 1,’’ which
list the Code Cases that the NRC has
determined to be acceptable alternatives
to applicable provisions of Section III
and Section XI, respectively.)
Licensees may request NRC approval
to implement one or more of the Code
Cases listed in Revision 2 of Regulatory

Guide 1.193, as provided in 10 CFR
50.55a(a)(3), which permits the use of
alternatives to the Code requirements
referenced in 10 CFR 50.55a, provided
that the proposed alternatives result in
an acceptable level of quality and safety.
To do so, a licensee must submit a
plant-specific request that addresses the
NRC’s concern about the given Code
Case.
The NRC staff is soliciting comments
on Draft Regulatory Guide DG–1135,
and comments may be accompanied by
relevant information or supporting data.
Please mention DG–1135 in the subject
line of your comments. Comments on
this draft regulatory guide submitted in
