SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The requested amendment has been granted under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA; 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.) and the provisions of 50 CFR 222.306 of the regulations governing the taking, importing, and exporting of endangered and threatened fish and wildlife (50 CFR 222–226). The modification extends the expiration date of the permit from December 31, 2005, to December 31, 2006, for takes of leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) sea turtles. The permit allows the SWFSC to conduct sea turtle research in the Pacific Ocean. The purpose of the research is to identify critical forage habitats, genetic stock structure, migratory corridors, and potential fishery impacts on this species in the Pacific Issuance of this modification, as required by the ESA, was based on a finding that such permit: (1) was applied for in good faith; (2) will not operate to the disadvantage of any threatened and endangered species; and (3) is consistent with the purposes and policies set forth in section 2 of the ESA.
