SUMMARY: Pursuant to section 102(2)(C)
of the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969, the National Park Service
(NPS) announces the availability of the
draft General management plan and
environmental impact statement (GMP/
EIS) for the North Unit of Badlands
National Park (BADL).
DATES: The GMP/EIS will remain
available for public review for 60 days
following the publishing of the notice of
availability in the Federal Register by
the Environmental Protection Agency.
Public meetings will be held in the
cities of Rapid City, Wall, and Pierre,
South Dakota. Meeting places and times

extended to maximum allowable under
36 CFR 51.23. Under the provisions of
current concession contracts and
pending the completion of the public
solicitation of a prospectus for a new
concession contract, the National Park
Service authorizes continuation of
visitor services for a period not-toexceed 1 year under the terms and
conditions of the current contract as
amended. The continuation of
operations does not affect any rights
with respect to selection for award of a
new concession contract.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The BADL
is a unit of the national park system.
The BADL was established due to the
area’s outstanding scenic values, its
importance to the science of
paleontology, and its mixed grass prairie
and associated natural resources,
including wildlife. Over half of the
North Unit is designated wilderness.
The draft GMP/EIS describes and
analyzes the environmental impacts of
the proposed management action
(preferred alternative) and two other
action alternatives for the future
management direction of the park,
including the impacts of the boundary
modifications. A no-action management
alternative also is evaluated.
Persons wishing to comment may do
so by any one of several methods. They
may attend the public hearing or open
houses noted above. They may mail
