The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory

to an existing guide in the agency’s
Regulatory Guide Series. This series has
been developed to describe and make
available to the public such information
as methods that are acceptable to the
NRC staff for implementing specific
parts of the NRC’s regulations,
techniques that the staff uses in
evaluating specific problems or
postulated accidents, and data that the
staff needs in its review of applications
for permits and licenses.
Revision 2 of Regulatory Guide 7.9,
‘‘Standard Format and Content of Part
71 Applications for Approval of
Packages for Radioactive Material,’’
provides guidance for use in preparing
applications for NRC approval of
packaging to be used in shipping Type
B and fissile radioactive materials. This
guidance describes a method that is
acceptable to the NRC staff for
complying with the NRC’s related
regulatory requirements in title 10, part
71, of the Code of Federal Regulations
(10 CFR part 71), ‘‘Packaging and
Transportation of Radioactive Material.’’
In December 2003, the NRC staff
published a draft of this guide as Draft
Regulatory Guide DG–7003. Following
the closure of the public comment
period on March 9, 2004, the staff
resolved all stakeholder comments in
the course of preparing Revision 2 of
Regulatory Guide 7.9.
